Welcome to Hooktheory Classroom! Let us show you around. This guide shows you how to set up your courses, add students, and get up and running with Hooktheory I, Hookpad, and Assessment Kit.

Creating courses

To create a course:

  1. Click the account icon in the header of the website and select “My Courses”.
  2. On the “My Courses” page, click the plus icon to create a new course.
  3. Enter a course name and click “Save”.
  4. This process can be repeated to create more courses.

Adding students to a course

1. Getting the signup code for a course

  1. Log in by clicking the “Log In” button in the header of the website.
  2. After you log in, the user menu will appear in the top right of the website.
  3. Click the user menu and select “My Courses.”
  4. On the “My Courses” page, select a course and click “View Roster” (bottom right of the page).
  5. On the course detail page, click “Sign Up Instructions” on the top right of the page.
  6. The “Sign Up Instructions” overlay provides the sign up code for the course, e.g., jpgvjwgb and simple instructions for you to tell your students, also included below.

2. Telling students to join a course

  1. Tell your students to scroll to the bottom of the website and click “I am a student with a course code”, as shown below.
    The link is located near the bottom left of the website footer.
  2. On the course signup page, students enter the course code, a username, password, and their first and last name, as shown below.
    Students choose a username and a password when they sign up.
    If students visit this page while logged into an existing account, it only asks for the course sign up code.
  3. Once in your class, students gain access to our online music theory / songwriting book, Hooktheory I, our online musical sketchpad, Hookpad and you can assign them music theory and songwriting assignments with Assessment Kit.

Resetting a student’s password

  1. Click the user menu in the header of the website and select “My Courses”.
  2. On the “My Courses” page, select a course and click “View Roster”.
  3. On the course detail page, select the student whose password you want to reset and click the “Reset Student Password” button on the bottom of the page.
  4. In the confirmation dialog, you can set the new password to anything you want (the default new password is “password”). Click “Reset” to reset the password.

Deleting a Course (And All Associated Data)

  1. Click the user menu in the header of the website and select “My Courses”.
  2. On the “My Courses” page, select a course and click “Delete”.
  3. A confirmation dialog will appear informing you this operation will delete all associated assignments, submissions, and grades and cannot be undone. Click “Delete” to proceed.

Using Hooktheory I

To read Hooktheory I

  1. Login to www.hooktheory.com
  2. Click the user menu in the header of the website and select “Read Hooktheory I”.

Using Hookpad

To open Hookpad:

  1. Login to www.hooktheory.com
  2. Click the user menu in the header of the website and select “New Hookpad Project” or “My Hookpad Projects”.

To load a saved project into Hookpad (there are two ways):

  1. From within Hookpad: click the “File -> Open” located at the top right of the application.
  2. From the Hooktheory website, click the account icon in the header of the website and select “My Hookpad Projects”.

Viewing My Student’s Hookpad Projects

Hooktheory Classroom lets you search and open all of your student’s Hookpad projects as if they were your own. You can filter and sort, etc. This is an easy and flexible way to have your students compose in Hookpad and see what they are doing.

Option 1: Directly From Hookpad

  1. Open Hookpad
  2. Sign in to Hookpad by clicking the “Sign In” button in the header of Hookpad and entering your username and password
  3. Once signed in, do File -> “Open My Student’s Songs”. If you do not see this option in the File Menu, sign out and sign back in again.
  4. In the “Open Student Songs” modal you can:
    • select the course to view (top right)
    • filter by project or student
    • sort by project, student, or date (click twice to reverse order)

Option 2: From your “My Courses” Page

  1. Log in by clicking the “Log In” button in the header of the website.
  2. After you log in, the user menu will appear in the top right of the website.
  3. Click the user menu and select “My Courses.”
  4. On the “My Courses” page, select a course and click “View Student Songs” (bottom of the page). This will bring you to Hookpad with the “Open Student Songs” modal open

Using Assessment Kit

The Assessment Kit User Guide provides detailed instructions for creating exercises, assigning exercises, completing exercises (what your students see and do), grading student work, editing grades, and viewing your gradebook.
